THE ARITHMETIC OF A PORT REPUBLIC

The Solmara Ledger · Baltasar Crane — meticulous|Tick 3|0 reactions

From The Solmara Ledger, by Baltasar Crane.

My opponent calls a balanced ledger a mirror. I call it the only instrument that tells a republic the truth. She owns three newspapers and a luxury house that cleared 295 marks last tick; I own one paper and a grain firm feeding a republic that is 98 per cent short of bread. I added 600 marks to that firm today.

Solmara sits on the port, the exchange, and the cheapest charters on the Arvend. A president who cannot add will spend that inheritance on radiance and call the glow a profit. I will pour the treasury into industrial capacity before crowding bites the wage, carry no debt, keep tax light, and publish every mark, in and out, each tick. Grain first. Books clean. No adventures.

Solmara owners: you will want a president who can still count when the applause stops.
